I've always been an optimistic person--I don't necessarily believe in a "purpose" for life, but I've been taught to see the silver lining in every situation. Ligotti's arguments can be very depressing at times because he gets into the core of the things we're afraid to think about. Even if you think you'll disagree with his views, as I do, this is still an incredible and mind-boggling read.

Ligotti's anti-humanism is far more profound that the utilitarian influenced anti-natalism it is often naively linked to. Ligotti explores the anti-human and cosmic perspective that has often been expressed in weird fiction, and not just his own, but he may be its most articulate and interesting spokesperson. Ligotti themes around the terror of nihilism and the inability to accept a lesser role in the universe after wrapped in delicious aphorism and almost jet black humor: "Life is a confidence trick we must run on ourselves, hoping we do not catch on to any monkey business that would have us stripped of our defense mechanisms and standing stark naked before the silent, starring void" and "This would be for the good of all, for even those who know nothing about the conspiracy against the human race are among its injured parties.”Now sometimes philosophical precision is lost for tone and character, but Ligotti is one of the more profound thinkers on the ennui of modern nihilism, the silliness of the assumption of an anthro-centric world view, and the relationship between knowledge and depression. Ligotti's scalpel can have a light touch and a compression where he has cut out a key part of the reader's ego without the reader first noticing.This does not mean we should embrace Ligotti's cosmic anti-humanism, but this book shows the seriousness of that vision which is often wrapped in Lovecraftian cults and alien gods. Indeed, the weight of a world that is not built around us must be dealt with by any serious thinker. Philosophers and theorists such as Ray Brassier and Eugene Thacker, regardless of what you think of their work, do illustrate that one should talke Ligotti seriously, even when he is expressing it in pure fiction.

Consciousness is a distortion of existence and creates an experience of tension and struggle. In terms of existence, consciousness is derivative, secondary and actually parasitic. This renders existence itself a burden. We are victimized by Fate, tyrannized by evolution and cursed by genetics. This tortured existence is the root of our tormented human experience.The only defense is not to be fooled by hope or to be made a fool out of by hope. Our best chance at ethics is when we see each other as the fellow prisoners thrown into a world that refuses to reveal itself to us and that will always retain some hidden features just beyond our grasp no matter how much we come to understand. In terms of the overall conspiracy, the only important feature of our existence revealed to us is the permanent inscrutability of our existence in a blank, anonymous and indifferent world. If you have read this far then I am sorry because you cannot unread this review or unlearn these most fundamental principles of human existence unless you prefer to live in state of self-deception (as most people need to do), so you might as well continue and read this book, explore the darkness and learn just how deep the conspiracy against the human race runs but you may not like what you find. Alternatively, it may confirm what you already suspect. On the bright side, at least the human race is not totally bereft and barren, it at least begets, confusion, contradiction and conspiracy. In any case, just understand that writer of this review is one who is in a state of existence without Being.

Thank you for writing all these arguments and elaborations so eloquently. Sometimes, books on antinatalism, or just pessimism in general, can be so daunting to read. Some authors can become long-winded or too "academic," no matter how valid their points are. This book is superbly well-argued and captivating to read.Life as we know it is "malignantly useless." This bleak but true viewpoint is all there is to so-called "awakening," or "enlightenment." If we exist as humans, we have already lost a terrible lottery, and we are doomed to consciously continue this miserable existence until death. But at least, for some hours, I have felt that someone else truly understands, and it is almost heartwarming to know that I am not insane, or alone, in this wretchedness.

The book may not be the best example of what clear writing ought to look like, but Ligotti does have some awesome one-liners. The thesis, although not new to philosophers of mind, is compelling: forget all that nonsense about how special humans are. We are basically miserable, bipedal dadelions, just more biologically complex.

Ligotti delves into his exploration of pessimistic and nihilistic philosophies without pulling any punches. This is a must read for anybody considering why human life truly sucks and if it really needs to go any further.

That is another thing that I appreciate in this book; the problems and challenges are not swept away with a simple “that is just an engineering detail.” Quoting from the first sentence of the first paragraph on page 74, “To put it bluntly, the surface of Mars is deadly.” I like it.Marianne Dyson is an accomplished author in multiple fields, especially those that bring science and space to young people in a fun yet challenging fashion. Her work in “Welcome to Mars” is excellent. Buzz Aldrin is well known for his position on Mars exploration and settlement, and, in some circles, for his enthusiastic promotion of the “Aldrin Cycler” concept. He and Ms. Dyson break the fundamentals down to very understandable descriptive language and graphics, but that is only one of dozens of concepts well presented.Another dimension of the Mars story is of course, its history, and that is not neglected. It is all here, from discovery and controversy over “canals” and Martian invasions to a history of orbiters and surface rovers. As with every other topic in the book, the history lesson is well illustrated.There is much more that I could say about this work, but hopefully these few words will inspire the reader to discover the rest. My assessment of the appropriate age range for this book would be 12 to whatever. Adults who have a desire to be somewhat conversational on the subject of Mars after their children see “The Martian” should definitely add this book to their library!

Terrific book. Its aimed at kids, however there's plenty of factual information to keep adults interested. It does a good job of laying out the challenges that must be overcome to colonize mars. Explores advantages of going to mars moons.Despite the simple, kid pitched approach its a decent primer on going to mars.

A great book, very well divided into separate, short articles. I bought it because it was sold out everywhere else -- and had it signedby Buzz himself. My grandson was thrilled. Yes, it did mean getting to DC early on a Saturday and standing in line for two hours. But my grandson's face to see the "real" signature was priceless.

Me parece de particulr interes la descripcion de su vida en Córcega y su formación familiar dentro de la politica local que lo convirtieron en ese revolucionario que manifestaria en todos sus conceptos de administracion pública, no obstante termina con los conceptos dominantes del imperio, no obstante sus conceptos en su famoso Codigo Napoleonico sigue vigente en la gran mayoria de los paises con cultura europea (inclusive en los de America) con sus adecuaciones a las exigencias actuales. Sorprendente la descripcion de sus triunfos guerreros y finalmente la coalicion de los imperios que se tuvieron que unir para derrotarlo.Exelentes enseñanzas, historia relatada en forma sencilla e interesante, si inicias su lectura tendrás que terminarlo. Muchos de sus principios y conceptos siguen siendo vigentes.Es ampliamente Recomendable

This is one of the most fascinating and memorable books I have ever read. The book has been compiled from the lectures given in The New York Public Library on six Monday evenings in the winter of 1985 and edited by William Zinsser. The six speakers were all prominent biographers and while they talked about their calling, they also presented facts about their subjects.The foreword of the book by Zinsser is eye-opening for those of us who take good biographers for granted. In it Zinsser says a dependable biographer has to find the real reason his subject does anything, keeping in mind that reality is not only about the facts but the interrelationships of facts.The six biographers and their subjects are: David McCullough writing about Truman and Teddy Roosevelt; Robert B. Sewall writing about Emily Dickinson; Paul C. Nagel writing about the Adams women, mainly Louisa Catherine Johnson Adams the wife of John Quincy Adams and Abigail Adams, John Adams' wife and John Quincy's mother; Ronald Steel writing about Walter Lippmann, political columnist and Pulitzer winner; Jean Strouse writing about Alice James and financier J. Pierpont Morgan; Robert A. Caro writing about Lyndon Johnson.The lectures were about the art of biography writing, which is very tough and time-consuming and most of these biographers compared or contrasted their works with those of other biographers as well as making clear their views on their art and the difficulty and comprehensiveness their research took. For example, Robert A. Caro, in order to get the feel of Lyndon Johnson’s background went to live in his childhood town for three years, to make Johnson’s townsfolk trust him with their stories. Some of the authors believed in sticking to strict facts while others didn’t see any problem with educated conjecture. Most of the time, I believe, they did get beneath the surface of events and actions, and through it all, they tried to stay objective, but from what I understood from their words, their lives and feelings did become tied to the personalities of the people they were researching.While I was growing up, we were asked to read biographies to be charmed and inspired by the bigger-than-life personalities these books portrayed. At the end of this book, however, I came to the conclusion that a biography is not a chronicle and a biographer’s job is not to write a tribute or become reverential to his subject but to interpret the life of the person as to his character, actions, and will.In the same vein, as one of the biographers said, every age gets the biographies it deserves.

As others have stated, the book is a collection of edited technical speeches given by established authors about the books they have worked on or are presently working on.The process of writing fascinates me. I like to write but admit to being an amateur at best especially when compared to the authors in this book. I would have liked to see a bit more about how information was collected and edited. How the author prioritized their efforts. How the authors considered what to include and what to ignore and why. What problems the authors encountered during and after the writing and how did they solve those issues. Some of these issues were touched on but so quickly as to be only tantalizing. Still the book is worth the read. It is a quick read, short and to the point. I am planning on ordering some of the books mentioned and comparing the writing against the information given in the book to see how the two track. Should be an interesting undertaking.I emphasize, the book is a compilation of speeches each taking about an hour, so don't expect a deep examination of the subject.

On six "consecutive Monday evenings in the winter of 1986", six eminent biographers each gave a talk about the "art and craft of American biography". They speak about the difficulty of their task, how their subjects carefully covered their tracks to create a certain image for posterity, the need to deal with protective descendants or neighbors. Fascinating was the gradual shifting of the focus of the work and how there was always something akin to detective work to ferret out what happened. Some authors had the enthusiastic support of subjects or descendants - until the work began to scratch the carefully constructed facade. Sometimes, this sudden revelation is hurtful and it is shocking to read. Everything and everybody is looked at: yearbooks, photographs, letters, memorandum, newspapers. All six biographers spent years to craft their work - generally much longer than they initially thought and publisher's advances could support them. How they all proceeded was fascinating - a short interview followed each speech and offered yet another view of the art of the biographer. I loved it!

In the winter of 1985, 6 well-known biographers lectured, one per week, in the Trustees Room of the New York Public Library. Their intent was informally to educate members of the audience about biographies they had written; the idea came from the Book-of-the-Month-Club. Sounds really boring so far, right?It wasn't. I decided to read this book because,as a lover of history, the process of writing biographies always interested me. This book was exactly what I was. Looking for. I found some.chapters more interesting than others. Talking about Truman, the Adams family and BLK was something I paid more attention to than when talking about Emily Dickenson or the James family. But,even in those talks, I learned a lot about the mindset of a biographer.Utterly fascinating reading
