In her autobiography, Olympic ski racer Street gives a solid chronology of her career with her independent "I'll do what I want" attitude. Not a typical sports superstar, Street prefers to hang out with her family or old friends. She's also not been a favorite model for magazine covers, since, due to her injuries, her weight has greatly fluctuated. However, it becomes evident that Street cares most about excelling at her sport and when she doesn't perform well, she blames herself and vows to improve for the next competition. Street attributes her atypical traits to her upbringing in Triumph, Idaho a small town near the Sun Valley and Ketchum ski resorts, where she grew up a tomboy and to her parents, who were "hippies" feeding the family from homegrown vegetables and providing the bare minimum. As an adolescent, Street's speed was apparent as she beat many more experienced male skiers. She loved speed but she also loved to please her father, who coached her. Street is charming and sometimes refreshingly honest: "Unfortunately, ski racing is no way to lose weight.... Skiing is also anaerobic. Detailed and insightful account of Picabo Street's life and struggle against great difficulties, including her own weaknesses. Still one of the best books for gaining insights into world class skiing. One reviewer criticizes Picabo for being self-absorbed. Apparently he failed to notice that the book is an autobiography. He also overlooked Picabo's self-criticism and acknowledgment of problems she sometimes created for herself and for ski teams.

I love stories of unique people and how they got where they are and this one doesnt disappoint in the least. It takes this gutsy young woman from childhood through accidents and challenges and while you may not like her you'll respect her for her guts and tenacity. She may not be an honor winning girl scout but she gets my vote for teaching us how to succeed. Worth your time.

If you are ever in need of some motivation to make your dreams come true...if you ever doubt your abilities and wonder if "little ol you" can accomplish the impossible....Read Picabo's book.Picabo is a wonderful example of what one person can accomplish, when they put their mind to it!We'll definitely be cheering Picabo on in the 2002 Winter Olympics! I'm sorry this book did nothing for me....A hero? An inspiration? I can not understand how people idolize her...a young man who lives down the street from me who served time in Iraq recently....he's a real hero and inspiration. Picabo Street is another one of those, cookie-cutter, self absorbed athletes who thinks the world revolves around them. Good luck to her...but she'll never have my respect.Steve

Mala grew up in a small Polish town near the German border. When the German's invaded, her husband was sent to a work camp and Mala and her daughter went into hiding with sympathetic Poles. Scared, the Poles were only able to hide her for a short period of time before sending her away. Ultimately, she grew tired of hiding and ended up in the Jewish ghetto. Despite her efforts, her daughter was separated from her, and sent to die in the gas chambers. When the ghetto was liquidated she ended up in a multitude of work camps, where she used her wits to trade for much needed food and necessities.This is a story of courage and determination. Although most of her family perished during the war, Mala is above all a survivor. Well written, the reader's hearts aches for Mala as she suffers and struggles. Overall I found this book to be a page-turner, and would recommend it to anyone interested in the holocaust.

Felt like I was actually there . Step by step encounters, taking me through the years of this women's survival. How people had to plan for anything that could happen and be alert, adaptable, cunning, emotionally strong,aim for survival every minute of every day. This story was never boring. Many details of life in the camps were explained that I had not heard before. Recommend this book to anyone interested in the Jewish life during the war.

Interesting to have a survivor's story told through interviews by her child. Remains a testament to the strength of a survivor despite all the hardships.

This straight forward account of a Polish Jew's survival of the Shoah made me feel as all the memoirs of Holocaust survivors do: it was just a matter of luck who would survive and who wouldn't. In Mala's case, however, she, to a great extent, made her own luck.The incident in which she takes out her prayer book and prays only to be ridiculed by those around her for still believing that prayers are answered says it all. Mala never stopped believing and realized what few do: prayers are a means of worshipping and loving God unconditionally not merely to seek having our worldly desires, no matter how just and desperate, fulfilled through divine intervention. How many could pass that test? I'm not sure could but this was the character of Mala and yet she was so worldly and wily in the daily challenges of getting what she needed to survive. A remarkable woman and a remarkable story.

A good story, very sad how many family members didn't survive. It's not easy following this story, it really jumps around and is disorganized at times. Also, could use a bit of editing.

I AM SO GLAD HE GOT HIS Mother's story. It is so well told and her memories for details, dates and names is wonderful. Her intelligence and cleverness shines throughout...it is no wonder at all that she survived. It speaks volumes that she could not fire the gun. I wonder if I could have been as understanding and forgiving.

I didn't like the story as much this time round but it was still interesting and a fast read. I read it in half a day. Still prefer Katherine over Jonah! Ha ha

And by "done it again", I mean "created another great history/mystery time travel tale".The fourth installment in The Missing series, Torn by Margaret Peterson Haddix, follows Jonah and Katherine as they travel back in time to the year 1611. The missing child that they must return to history in order to correct time? John Hudson, son of the famous (famously crazy, that is) Henry Hudson. The only problem: JB, Jonah and Katherine's time travel...supervisor, you could say, is unable to find the 21st century boy who is actually John Hudson to send him back to the past. A truly missing child!But, of course, there are more problems than just a missing (missing) historical figure. Jonah must pretend to be John, mask, wigs, clothing, and all, in hopes of setting history straight. However, after an hour or so aboard the Discovery, Henry Hudson's ship, all time is thrown out of balance. Tracers, ghost-like figures that show what is supposed to happen in history, go missing, Jonah and Katherine lose all connections with JB, and an evil Mr. Prickett threatens the safety of the ship's crew, most significantly Jonah.Taking matters into their own hands, Jonah (still disguised as John Hudson) and Katherine (who is invisible thanks to the time traveling device, the Elucidator) try to make sense of the odd mishaps in time that keep occurring and attempt to save history and rescue their friends who are still stuck in the year 1600.Captivating and well-paced, Torn provides a set of loveable characters and rich historical settings to create an enjoyable read. Fans of the previous books in the Missing series will not be disappointed.

My almost 14 year old son loved this book and series. He read it for optional summer reading.

I am a 12 year old girl who loves reading and when i started reading the missing series i fell in love. I would totally recommend this book to anybody who loves reading, or for any parent who wants their child to start reading. It is also a book that is for pretty much all ages.

Son really liked the series.

I love it as a matter of fact I've got my husband and daughter riding it and when there done I'm have 3 people at work reading it.

Lots of drama with not much substance.

Another great book in "The Missing" series! These books are really well written and contain a lot of historical knowledge presented in a very entertaining format. I hope she keeps them coming!

Typical high quality Lonely Planet guide, intermediate between backpackers' style and luxury style. Aimed at travelers, rather than mere tourists. That is, we like to interact with the locals and get immersed in the ambiance of each place we visit, rather that just check off a list of tourist sites visited. We use Rick Steves for Europe and Lonely Planet for the rest of the world.

This is a very comprehensive guide with information on many different areas in Fiji. It was very helpful in planning places to visit and estimating visit times in the country. Limited usefulness in choosing accommodations, as this wonderful series is geared towards budget travelers.

A great way to organize your trip! I first started planning my trip to Fiji by going online, but there is so much information, It's just hard to organize all the information. This guide is perfect for organizing and planning.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I wish there was more information on Savusavu though.

Its a little smaller than I thought it would be, but it seems to include more activities than I thing I'll be able to do in any one trip.

Do not buy! Not accurate. Referrals to a particular page number are inaccurate. Quits difficult to find the info I needed

Tim Tigner is a brilliant writer, no pun intended (the title). I can’t read his books fast enough as they are published. I have almost all of his books with the exception of this one—I got this one with my Kindle Unlimited.The 2 main characters (the good guys) in the story are Kyle Achilles, ex-CIA, and Katya, a Russian doctoral mathematician. These two connect because Katya was engaged to Kyle’s brother before he was murdered. Achilles is arrested for the murder of his family but escapes through the planning of some of his former co-workers. Then the ride is on. Achilles & Katya go on the run together around the globe, tracking down one clue after another and finding themselves in some pretty dangerous situations. To Achilles surprise Katya comes to his rescue more than once through out the story. The pace of the story is fast and suspenseful and you never know what to expect from one moment to the next. You just have to keep reading because you just have to know what is going to happen next. When the end finally comes, there is one surprise that you would not have suspected but is what inspired this story in the first place. You will just have to read it to find out the surprise ending.This story had a satisfying conclusion even though you can tell that there will be a second book (I can’t wait!), and there was no bad language or steamy sex scenes in the story.Tim Tigner writes the best spy thrillers out there, I will always read his books.

I read a lot of books (usually at least one a day) and when I saw this concerned a spy/CIA operative up against a Russian threat I though… “this scenario has been overused” but… I was very pleasantly surprised! Very entertaining book, unique premise, suspenseful flow of action, well-crafted back and forth from the US to Russia, and great character development. Anxious to read the next saga with Achilles & Katya.Rather than racing through this book to finish and get on to the next book, I “savored” the read and enjoyed the ride. Keep them coming Tim!

This novel started slowly and the plot seemed somewhat improbable, but "Pushing Brilliance" really grabbed my interest about a quarter of the way through, and didn't let up! I greatly appreciate creativity, especially with character development, and Tim Tigner definitely has a gift in this regard. Kyle Achilles, aka "Achilles" (okay, maybe too much of an homage to Reacher), isn't the usual hero with a Special Operations Operator backstory. He IS an interesting person, and so are the main characters who are fellow heroes and villains.The plot is also creative and fresh, and quite believable, which is a key element for my liking a novel enough to give it a five-star rating. I enjoyed "Pushing Brilliance" enough that I purchased the sequel, "The Lies of Spies" 30 seconds after finishing. (I enjoyed the sequel as much as the first book.) There's even a short prequel, "Chasing Ivan", which isn't half bad, and helps to understand why Kyle Achilles is the way he is.

WOW! This was the last Tigner novel for me left unread. So I REALLY tried to drag it out for as long as possible. But if you really like a fast-paced plot, interesting techno thrillers, with a kick-ass protagonist, it is VERY HARD to not just sit down and read it in 1-2 days. Tigner's military background as a Special Forces -trained specialist well versed in Russian and Soviet counter-intelligence, and his civilian experience working in the post-Soviet Moscow with prominent multinational medical companies, and finally extensive experience working in silicon-valley as a CEO of a start-up launching new medical technologies is ALL evident in a most skilled plot with fascinatingly possible medical technologies and targeted bio-weapons. Like any good movie hero, the protagonist is bigger than life, and the "bad guys" are very evil. The personal combat series are very believable for a "not-too-old" CIA-trained biathlete. As someone who has written non-fiction medical books, I am frustrated by reviews who complain about "small print." Tigner I am confident has NOTHING to do with the selection of the cover-art nor the size of the text. I agree with thoughtful comparisons of Kyle Achilles with Brad Thor's Scot Harvath, and Steve Berry's Cotton Malone, Nelson DeMille's John Corey, and Brian Haig's Sean Drummond. Tim Tigner is "Brillyan(t)". Can't wait to see the movie. Also would really like to hear this as an AudioBook with either Dick Hill or Scott Brick.

This is one never-ending, continuously suspenseful thrill ride with brief moments that allow you to catch your breath before it's unexpectedly stolen again! And it doesn't stop until the very end!! Sit down, get comfy, take a deep, relaxing breath before the first page because you might not get another before the last. Easily worth 5 stars!!! Probably more but I am still coming down from the high and calming my racing heart before I dive head first into the next in the Kyle Achilles series. :) Tim Tigner is one scary former counterterrorism specialist with either an imagination that's been starving for the action of his past work or one fertilized by those same experiences...and I don't think I want to know which it is! I'm just going to keep enjoying the benefits of his racing imagination and talented creations!

Just finished the book tonight. I love suspense novels with international drama. I actually enjoyed the escape and the information. But what really struck me most was at the end he thanked the reader. He explained that sticking with the book was appreciated. And the final turn surprised me. I found little suspension of belief about money and how long it takes to do some things. But I enjoyed the book and am an avid reader of all the suspense novel hero. My late husband and I always enjoyed reading a book and sharing the points we thought were interesting.Will be going for more of his books.

I first read this novel when I was ten years old, and its protagonist became my personal hero and model for years afterward. I recently reread it as an adult, decades later, and the book holds up very well. Given that it was written around 1950 some of the technological extrapolation ends up looking quite dated, but none of that is relevant to the plot, and if you look past it the story itself is extremely compelling. Even more important, Clarke's legendary ability to craft scenes with descriptions verging on poetry is on full display here. I actually ended up rereading the book because I was trying to tell someone about the prologue, which in about three pages succeeds in establishing both the setting and the mood for the entire novel.Clarke later rewrote this story as "The City and the Stars"; he was unhappy with the original, one of his first published works. I actually think this book is superior to that one, but that might be nostalgia talking. :)If you enjoy Clarke's vision of vast gulfs of space and time in this novel, you should also read "Last and First Men" and "Star Maker" by Olaf Stapledon. Clarke acknowledged Stapledon as a major influence on his writing, and this novel is very clearly in part an homage to "Last and First Men".

There are two books in one here. The first is Arthur C Clarke's first sci fi novel, Against the Fall of Night. The second is a sequel written with Clarke's permission by another author titled, Beyond the Fall of Night. As the title of this review indicates, I liked the first, but really didn't care for the second.Set in the very far future on Earth, the first book is a tale of two, very different human civilizations which have been separated for many, many years. One is super technological with very long living people. The other is more the back to nature type with people with much shorter life spans.A young man from the super tech group rediscovers the other group and goes on an adventure with a friend he meets among the other group. He learns the real truth about Earth's history and the split of humanity. Quite a surprise.It's a good story, though some aspects seem a bit of a stretch. It was written a long time ago.The sequel is just weird. I was barely able to force myself to finish it.Interestingly, Clarke rewrote the first book and published it as The City and the Stars. I reviewed it separately. I liked both versions, but I liked the first a bit more than the second. See what you think.

When Arthur C. Clarke published this SciFi tale (serially in 1948, as a book in 1953), he set it a billion years in the future. At that distance, science fiction gains a lot of freedom and can be expected to age slowly, since few (!) readers will live to see whether the author's ideas touch on future reality. Against the Fall of Night (Arthur C. Clarke Collection: Vanamonde) is a classic that, surprisingly, continues to be popular after its makeover, "The City and the Stars", was published in 1956. Each version of the story has its virtues."Against the Fall of Night" is the harder SciFi version. The City, Diaspar, has been a refuge for humanity for eons, and has achieved a worthwhile, stable society. However, the City's stability and the longevity of its citizens have come at the expense of human drive and innovation. Science and engineering long ago established a technological cocoon, and have disappeared from the City's modern pursuits. The book has two main elements. First, description of the nature of technology and society in Clarke's vision of the distant future. Second, the plot centers on explorations of its 20-year-old protagonist, Alvin, and the consequent disruptions that will apparently lead to renewed vigor and growth of humanity."Against..." helped to develop and popularize concepts such as vast computers, human space travel, machines that can reconstitute anything on demand (including people), faster-than-light travel (essential if humans are to gad about the universe), and both civilizations and intelligent beings enormously advanced beyond humankind. Modern readers with a certain amount of scientific knowledge and skepticism might find some "visions" here that are very likely to belong forever in the realm of magic and dreams. Such imagined capabilities can, however, provide a rich background for adventure stories. Some of the ideas eventually find echoes in advances of science and technology.This book has pleased many YA and adult readers over its 60+ years in print and is still well worth reading. The Kindle version is quite well done, with few textual errors.For readers who want to decide whether to read this book or its expanded version (or both?), I've writtten a review of "The City and the Stars" that might help you choose, see http://www.amazon.com/review/R27P4KPCX7CSBT/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm . Clarke will want to read both.Review value added (!):My favorite of Clarke's SciFi books is "Rendezvous with Rama".Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy and its extensions are SciFi classics that explore some of the same ideas in the context of very different stories and with different "spin". Unless you suffer from extreme aversion to SciFi, don't miss those 5-star novels.

Arthur C Clarke's Against the Fall of Night is a 1950's era sci-fi tale that takes place hundreds of millions of years into the future at which point humanity has supposedly been relegated to Earth by long forgotten 'invaders' annoyed at Earth's expansion. The story is told by a young boy living in the only city and is also the only child as immortality has been established. The child is curious and goes on a journey and adventure as he asks questions no one wants to ask and goes places no one believes possible. His journey takes him to another distant city without immortality, but possessing mind control. This leads to more adventures and unraveling the mysteries of the ancient story of how the current situation came to exist - big hint: it's not what he was told.Clarke's timescale is a bit hard to take. Asserting that hundreds of millions of years have elapsed, it's still hard to imagine that even long lived individuals could remain frightened of long ago tales no one remembers. In addition, beyond the concept of no progress ever having been made in such a long time, boredom would certainly have killed everyone as nothing ever changes. Clarke seems to be commenting on cultural, societal, and scientific stagnation as a death knell with immortality, while there just doesn't seem any explanation for why the mind controllers remain in a pseudo-pastoral island. The only motivation appears to be avoiding change.
