About the Author

Li Deng is the Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer of Citadel since May 2017. Prior to Citadel, he was the Chief Scientist of AI, the founder of Deep Learning Technology Center, and Partner Research Manager at Microsoft. Prior to Microsoft, he was a tenured full professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada as well as teaching and conducting research at MIT (Cambridge), ATR (Kyoto, Japan) and HKUST (Hong Kong). He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, and a Fellow of the ISCA. He has also been an Affiliate Professor at University of Washington since 2000. He was an elected member of Board of Governors of the IEEE Signal Processing Society, and was Editors-in-Chief of IEEE Signal Processing Magazine and of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing (2008-2014), for which he received the IEEE SPS Meritorious Service Award. In recognition of the pioneering work on disrupting speech recognition industry using large-scale deep learning, he received the 2015 IEEE SPS Technical Achievement Award for “Outstanding Contributions to Deep Learning and to Automatic Speech Recognition." He also received numerous best paper and patent awards for the contributions to artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, information retrieval, multimedia signal processing, and speech processing. He is an author or co-author of six technical books. Yang Liu is an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science and Technology, Tsinghua University. He received his PhD degree from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Computing Technology in 2007. His research focuses on natural language processing and machine translation. He has published over 50 papers in leading NLP/AI journals and conferences such as Computational Linguistics, ACL, AAAI, EMNLP, and COLING. He won the COLING/ACL 2006 Meritorious Asian NLP Paper Award and the National Science and Technology Progress Award second prize. He served as Associate Editor of ACM TALLIP, ACL 2014 tutorial co-chair, ACL 2015 local arrangement co-chair, IJCAI 2016 senior PC, ACL 2017 area co-chair, EMNLP 2016 area co-chair, SIGHAN information officer, and the general secretary of the Computational Linguistics Technical Committee of Chinese Information Processing Society.

It's a compilation of high-level summaries of NLP papers. Half of the book are references. No wonder the "authors" are called "editors". I can't believe I spent $120 on this.

No doubt these two authors are highly knowledgeable in the field, but you won't gain much from spending this $ on the book. The other review is exactly right. This book is just a bunch of references, and doesn't teach you much. Just a survey of recent methods, look somewhere else for a textbook. Book should be priced at half of current listing at most.

I completely disagree with the other two reviewers. This book is a curated survey, and it does a superb work in describing the state of the art in deep natural language processing at the end of 2017. Each chapter is self-contained and you will get a full understanding of the progress made in sentiment analysis, q&a, traditional npl, knowledge graph, assistant, decisions, captioning, image analysis. I definitely recommend the book if you want to get uptodate instead of reading hundreds of articles, find them, and buy them

Very disappointed in this book. I am a self proclaimed Aretha super fan and this book was a disappointment. Everybody knows that Aretha was a diva and that's part of the reason that we loved her . That and THAT VOICE! We know that Ree throws shades and did it often, but in this book she played the victim to the fullest. She shared nothing about her life and you're left feeling empty because Aretha paints this picture perfect life which we all know was far from the truth. The other book written by David Ritz that Aretha called "lies" is more than likely the whole truth and is a much better read. It shows the Aretha that we love, the shade throwing DIVA that we grew to love.

Love the autobiography of Aretha Franklin,Rare to get. Mine came to me used but in like new condtion.RIP QUEEN OF SOUL. P.S but not cheap to get such a like new copy.

There still should be plenty of this autobiography available, instead of hunting down a pricey copy. Very enjoyable read; could not save it for later. Devastated that she is now no longer with us.

In her autobiography, Olympic ski racer Street gives a solid chronology of her career with her independent "I'll do what I want" attitude. Not a typical sports superstar, Street prefers to hang out with her family or old friends. She's also not been a favorite model for magazine covers, since, due to her injuries, her weight has greatly fluctuated. However, it becomes evident that Street cares most about excelling at her sport and when she doesn't perform well, she blames herself and vows to improve for the next competition. Street attributes her atypical traits to her upbringing in Triumph, Idaho a small town near the Sun Valley and Ketchum ski resorts, where she grew up a tomboy and to her parents, who were "hippies" feeding the family from homegrown vegetables and providing the bare minimum. As an adolescent, Street's speed was apparent as she beat many more experienced male skiers. She loved speed but she also loved to please her father, who coached her. Street is charming and sometimes refreshingly honest: "Unfortunately, ski racing is no way to lose weight.... Skiing is also anaerobic. Detailed and insightful account of Picabo Street's life and struggle against great difficulties, including her own weaknesses. Still one of the best books for gaining insights into world class skiing. One reviewer criticizes Picabo for being self-absorbed. Apparently he failed to notice that the book is an autobiography. He also overlooked Picabo's self-criticism and acknowledgment of problems she sometimes created for herself and for ski teams.

I love stories of unique people and how they got where they are and this one doesnt disappoint in the least. It takes this gutsy young woman from childhood through accidents and challenges and while you may not like her you'll respect her for her guts and tenacity. She may not be an honor winning girl scout but she gets my vote for teaching us how to succeed. Worth your time.

I'm sorry this book did nothing for me....A hero? An inspiration? I can not understand how people idolize her...a young man who lives down the street from me who served time in Iraq recently....he's a real hero and inspiration. Picabo Street is another one of those, cookie-cutter, self absorbed athletes who thinks the world revolves around them. Good luck to her...but she'll never have my respect.Steve

Mala grew up in a small Polish town near the German border. When the German's invaded, her husband was sent to a work camp and Mala and her daughter went into hiding with sympathetic Poles. Scared, the Poles were only able to hide her for a short period of time before sending her away. Ultimately, she grew tired of hiding and ended up in the Jewish ghetto. Despite her efforts, her daughter was separated from her, and sent to die in the gas chambers. When the ghetto was liquidated she ended up in a multitude of work camps, where she used her wits to trade for much needed food and necessities.This is a story of courage and determination. Although most of her family perished during the war, Mala is above all a survivor. Well written, the reader's hearts aches for Mala as she suffers and struggles. Overall I found this book to be a page-turner, and would recommend it to anyone interested in the holocaust.

Felt like I was actually there . Step by step encounters, taking me through the years of this women's survival. How people had to plan for anything that could happen and be alert, adaptable, cunning, emotionally strong,aim for survival every minute of every day. This story was never boring. Many details of life in the camps were explained that I had not heard before. Recommend this book to anyone interested in the Jewish life during the war.

Interesting to have a survivor's story told through interviews by her child. Remains a testament to the strength of a survivor despite all the hardships.

This straight forward account of a Polish Jew's survival of the Shoah made me feel as all the memoirs of Holocaust survivors do: it was just a matter of luck who would survive and who wouldn't. In Mala's case, however, she, to a great extent, made her own luck.The incident in which she takes out her prayer book and prays only to be ridiculed by those around her for still believing that prayers are answered says it all. Mala never stopped believing and realized what few do: prayers are a means of worshipping and loving God unconditionally not merely to seek having our worldly desires, no matter how just and desperate, fulfilled through divine intervention. How many could pass that test? I'm not sure could but this was the character of Mala and yet she was so worldly and wily in the daily challenges of getting what she needed to survive. A remarkable woman and a remarkable story.

A good story, very sad how many family members didn't survive. It's not easy following this story, it really jumps around and is disorganized at times. Also, could use a bit of editing.

I AM SO GLAD HE GOT HIS Mother's story. It is so well told and her memories for details, dates and names is wonderful. Her intelligence and cleverness shines throughout...it is no wonder at all that she survived. It speaks volumes that she could not fire the gun. I wonder if I could have been as understanding and forgiving.

I didn't like the story as much this time round but it was still interesting and a fast read. I read it in half a day. Still prefer Katherine over Jonah! Ha ha

And by "done it again", I mean "created another great history/mystery time travel tale".The fourth installment in The Missing series, Torn by Margaret Peterson Haddix, follows Jonah and Katherine as they travel back in time to the year 1611. The missing child that they must return to history in order to correct time? John Hudson, son of the famous (famously crazy, that is) Henry Hudson. The only problem: JB, Jonah and Katherine's time travel...supervisor, you could say, is unable to find the 21st century boy who is actually John Hudson to send him back to the past. A truly missing child!But, of course, there are more problems than just a missing (missing) historical figure. Jonah must pretend to be John, mask, wigs, clothing, and all, in hopes of setting history straight. However, after an hour or so aboard the Discovery, Henry Hudson's ship, all time is thrown out of balance. Tracers, ghost-like figures that show what is supposed to happen in history, go missing, Jonah and Katherine lose all connections with JB, and an evil Mr. Prickett threatens the safety of the ship's crew, most significantly Jonah.Taking matters into their own hands, Jonah (still disguised as John Hudson) and Katherine (who is invisible thanks to the time traveling device, the Elucidator) try to make sense of the odd mishaps in time that keep occurring and attempt to save history and rescue their friends who are still stuck in the year 1600.Captivating and well-paced, Torn provides a set of loveable characters and rich historical settings to create an enjoyable read. Fans of the previous books in the Missing series will not be disappointed.

My almost 14 year old son loved this book and series. He read it for optional summer reading.

I am a 12 year old girl who loves reading and when i started reading the missing series i fell in love. I would totally recommend this book to anybody who loves reading, or for any parent who wants their child to start reading. It is also a book that is for pretty much all ages.

Son really liked the series.

I love it as a matter of fact I've got my husband and daughter riding it and when there done I'm have 3 people at work reading it.

Lots of drama with not much substance.

Another great book in "The Missing" series! These books are really well written and contain a lot of historical knowledge presented in a very entertaining format. I hope she keeps them coming!
