Reading this collection did give me hope; however, I don't feel like it is a book someone would read and say, "Oh. I'll do that!"

Bought this for my daughter, who just got interested in politics. Love the short chapters. So much wisdom here and I like the big paperback size.

You SAID it, Libba Bray!! #MakeAmericaSmartAgainSo this is a neat book targeted towards teenagers (but entertaining and inspiring for all of us) with essays, poems, songs and more creative work from all kinds of people, explaining why and how they "resist." Sometimes "resist" means protesting, or making art, or just being yourself in an unfriendly world - but in all cases, it means finding the truth, having compassion, and standing up for what's right. Three things this world could surely use a lot more of lately, and in the long run.I do wish the book had more visuals - art, photographs, more comics, etc. - as well as links to things like a recording of the song (shown in the book via sheet music), or but I love that it has a "reading list" of resistance books suggested by librarians from around the country!

Summary:The youth of today are getting more tech savvy, and understanding much more of what is going on in the world than I feel like I was at their age. They see the issues prevalent in the world that they will inherit; and they’re ready to start making a difference. The problem is, they’re too young to vote, and often aren’t taken very seriously. Add to that, they don’t always have the life experience or the confidence to be heard. Plus… all the issues, all the problems…. it all seems so huge that it could be overwhelming.Where do you begin? How do you find your way? Will it even matter? Through essays, interviews and other forms we go through these questions. Each piece is geared toward giving non violent ideas on how to be heard, choosing your platform, who to talk to…. along with the resounding message that the reader is not alone.My thoughts:I have a book hangover (*sips coffee*). I couldn’t put this book down, and ended up reading it- and rereading my favorite parts- in one day. My eBook is covered with highlights and notes. Actually, I also bought the audiobook and would consider the hardback as well if I didn’t think Warren would kill me.When I first heard about this book, I was ecstatic. If done right, this could be one of the most important books of the year to my mind. You have youths that are strong, articulate and courageous like Emma Gonzales. She inspires me, as I know she has thousands of others. But I feel like she is the exception, not the rule. Most young people aren’t ready for that sort of platform- some people like myself will never be. So what do you do? You still want to help, everyone wants to leave the world better than they found it. But it seems like too much- these things could swallow you whole!That’s where this book comes in. With every short story, essay, song and interview we are given clear, concise directives on what can be done behind the scenes. On steps that we can take, and people to contact. Not only that, but we are told time and again that we aren’t alone. I feel like that’s important. With every shared experience you get a sense of community and togetherness. The world isn’t so crazy when you know there are others that felt what you feel, and hear about what they did about it. The book both gave me peace from the gnawing anxiety that the news now gives me; along with hope. Almost serenity. I may not be able to do much…. but I have a voice and I can be heard. That is what I came away with (along with a hefty list of books that I could read as I move further into activism). I feel like it would do the same for my niece, and really for anyone. This is this the kind of book I wish I had as a teen. Especially when I was trying to figure out where my voice fit into the world that often times felt like it was drawn out by the angry voices of adults who were too busy yelling at one another vs taking the time to listen to each other when it came to opposing views. As an adult reading this book, it's a reminder that there is hope in our future generations. That the word resistance isn't a dirty word, or a political stance. Resistance is your stance on matters that mean something to you. It's standing your ground for who you are, what you believe in, and so forth, despite what the rest of the world may believe, or say. Activism is fighting for change.This book is not what I thought it would be. It was much better. It's a reminder of what resistance, activism and hope are, and how they're all tied together. It's also a reminder of the active role we all play in them. What this is book is not, is a yelling match of political sides going back and forth, telling the other why they're wrong. If anything, this book reads like a roundtable discussion of shared thoughts, and calls to actions by a variety of people who's diverse background have had them resisting societies labels on them since they were young. Their interviews, short essays, thoughts, songs, poems, and guides are a valuable resource to readers who see themselves in them.So much hate has been spewed since last year. I feel like resistance and activism are words that get thrown around with hate. They're not. They're hope. This book will make readers realize we can all be apart of the resistance (think Star Wars if you have to) in their own unique ways. In listening to what's being said in the words of this book, readers of all ages will understand why these authors, artists, and activists, collaborated on this book.I took some notes on the things that stood out to me while I read this book. A required text book for Nursing 4. It goes over everything from how the NCLEX works to topics for what to expect once you're on the job. I just skimmed for now and one of the few required books that seems interesting and not completely dry material like all the other text books I needed. I just wonder if this is going to actually be used once the semester is in full swing or it's a companion book they have you buy but never use for school but is for your own reference. Well if it's the latter, I would definitely read this one.

Textbook came as described and quickly! It seems brand new for a used item so that's nice. One corner came bent but seems it was from packaging. No biggie. Thanks, and now I'm ready to begin my last semester of nursing school!

On her first day, she bumps into Bishop, the most popular boy in school and he can't take his eyes off her. Bishop knows she is his one as soon as he touched her. Now he has to convince her that his feelings and hers are too important to ignore. But is there more to this small town and the authority Bishop seems to wield for a teenager in high school?I absolutely loved, loved, LOVED Bishop and Cara!!!! Oh my gosh, Bishop is so over the top possessive and protective and struggles to reign it in so Cara won't shut him out. Cara doesn't know how to depend on other people, she has always just had herself. The atmosphere of high school as the back drop for this story just added to the emotional highs and lows of Cara's situation and her doubts about Bishop and her friend Mandy. Elisa Leigh does an amazing job of building the intrigue of what is really going on in this town as well as what is happening between these two young adults. I was taken by surprise when it was finally revealed which doesn't happen often. I also have to say that I don't normally like stories in two or more parts but this one works. We are left at a happy for now and the story will conclude this summer. I cannot wait for more Bishop and Cara!

I loved it! I was surprised about what the big secret turned out to be. Bishop and Cara are magical together. This does end in a cliffhanger, but also a HFN. I so can’t wait for the next in this series. This is unlike what this author has written before. I think this series could quickly become my favorite of hers.

4.5 StarsI really, really enjoyed this story. It took a turn that I did not expect, I was way off in what kind of story I thought it was. I thought Cara was the star of this book. For all she had been through she still stood tall. Sure some things got to her and hurt her but she is a 17 year old girl who has been through so much, so seeing her emotions break through was heartbreaking. Bishop knew immediately that Cara was his soulmate and he went out of his way to love and protect her. But as any typical 18 year old he messed up here and there and caused some drama. He really wasn’t good at explaining things and getting his feelings out there without bumbling it up, lol. It definitely caused Cara some confusion. I can honestly say that I knew girls like Alexis in high school. They are mean, jealous and petty. It was nice to see Bishop put her in her place. I hope she doesn’t cause any future problems. I did want Cara to ask more questions sooner. I wanted to shake her and have her demand answers on why everyone was so weird and cryptic, not knowing would have drove me crazy.Warning this book does end on a cliffhanger. I can’t wait for book 2. I can’t believe I have to wait till summer to get it!Safety and SpoilersCompletely safe. Both are virgins. There are a couple of graphic scenes between the two and she is only 17. There is op drama. Bishop’s ex causes some drama and a classmate attacks Cara at a party.I voluntarily read an arc copy for my honest review! I need book 2!

First off just wow this was so cool and very different. I had no idea what kind of story this was going to be and I loved it. I loved how different this book was written.Bishop and cara definitely have a lot of passion and love that they hold for each other and it is so beautiful. Can’t wait for part two to come out so I can get more of what is going on with the power of the couple and the town and what is coming.I also can't wait for the other stories with different couples. I'm so excited.This was an ARC book I volunteered to read.

This is book 1 in the Hallows Creek SeriesThis does end in a cliffhanger.One of my new favorites by this author! Bishop was such a great story and I couldn't put it down. I loved the story from begining to end. The characters were interesting and dynamic.Bishop was such a great hero and he made me swoon with his need to protect Cara. Their unique bond was so sweet and special. Cara was also such a great heroine, and so strong. I can't wait for the second part to this in the series.

This book was amazing...it had me hooked wanting to keep turning the pages to figure out all the missing/hidden points.It did not disappoint!The chemistry between Bishop and Cara was so strong and intense...while the timeframe in the book was fast it didn't feel like their relationship was rushed or forced it flowed very well.I'm very excited for Part 2 in summer...its going to be a long hard wait, but if its anything like book 1 it'll be worth the wait!

About the Author

Denny Matthews has been with the Kansas City Royals as a radio announcer since the club’s first season, 1969. Besides working for the Royals, Matthews has worked games for the CBS Radio Network. After the 2003 season, the Royals selected Matthews for the club’s Hall of Fame. Matthews, a 1966 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan, lettered in baseball and football for three years. In 1999, along with Fred White and Matt Fulks, Matthews coauthored Play by Play: 25 Years of Royals on Radio. Matt Fulks started his journalism career while attending Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. Since then he has been involved in every form of media, including work with WSMV-TV (Nashville’s NBC affiliate), WAKM radio, and the Review-Appeal newspaper. Fulks is currently a regular contributor for various publications, including a weekly newspaper column, Behind the Stats, which focuses on inspirational stories from the world of sports. He is also the author or coauthor of six other books, including Behind the Stats: Tennessee’s Coaching Legends and Super Bowl Sunday, which he compiled in association with CBS Sports.

I've been a Royals fan since about 1975, and have listened to hundreds of hours of Denny's broadcasting. His writing talent is not as great as his broadcast, but it was nonetheless enjoyable. I probably liked the information about the Royals Baseball Academy the best.

My husband enjoyed this book very much. There were historical tales that he remembered as a boy but brought back happy memories of going to the Royals games with his dad.

I gave this as a gift to my father. He loved it!

My son loved it, since he is went to the games. He is a season ticket holder.

Anne Keene's THE CLOUDBUSTER NINE is a fascinating and engaging story. Keene tells the tale of the naval aviation training program that took place in Chapel Hill, North Carolina (and four other sites) during World War II. On one level, the book provides a powerful and revealing look at some of the men of the Greatest Generation as they prepared to fight for America's freedom--men like George H. W. Bush and John Glenn. But the book is also a delightful and impressively researched story about some of the major league baseball players--Ted Williams and Johnny Pesky, for example--who trained as pilots and played ball for a team called the Cloudbuster Nine, a squad that played several exhibitions against other major leaguers (Babe Ruth appears in the book as another individual who contributed to the war effort in his own way). Finally, the book is a touching and emotional memoir that relates the experiences of Keene's father, the team's bat boy and later an aspiring minor league pitcher. The book is filled with memorable anecdotes and photographs. I would recommend it to any reader who enjoys World War II history or little-known facts about some of America's great heroes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Cloudbuster Nine. Amazingly researched, Anne Keene's book reads like a novel even though it presents a real life history of an important time in our country. The story goes way beyond Ted Williams and the Chapel Hill fighter pilot baseball team, giving the context of the events from a worldwide historical perspective. Touching personal stories are interspersed throughout the book, which not only draw the reader forward but make it one of the most heartwarming tributes I've read. A must read for baseball lovers, history buffs, and anyone who wants to be transported back to a time of real heroes.

This is a great book! Anne is a terrific writer, hopefully there will be more to come from her. You don’t have to be a sports’ fan to enjoy this book. It is filled with tons of details on pilot training at UNC during WW2. Anne’s terrific account of her Dad’s baseball career and his love of the game is so interesting, heartwarming and at times sad. There are stories about Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, The Babe and so many other stars. I loved “Cloudbuster 9”!

A fun read. Anne Keene tells a story that not many Americans know about. Military and baseball historical buffs will find this work informative and interesting. As a middle aged student of history and baseball in particular" The Cloudbuster Nine" more than satisfies on several levels. This is a work that blends history and a personal family relationship. Major Leaguers like Ted Williams , Johnny Pesky and Johnny Sain are bought to life in different roles than on the diamond. An extensively researched book. All in all a very touching story. It is no doubt that these pilots represented the " Greatest Generation" in a supreme way. But, everyone on the home front pitched in. It is essential that the younger generations of our nation are exposed to the history of this era.

Although I purchased this book to add to those I already own about my childhood idol, I found that it covers a much broader topic in addition to its portraits of Ted, Pesky, and the other players on this team of Naval pilot cadets. Basically, the author is searching for an answer to why her father, who was the team's bat boy,became an embittered and emotionally withdrawn adult despite his lifelong love for baseball. Her discovery of his dusty trunk filled with forgotten photographs became the basis for her research. There are only 45 men alive who played in the major leagues and also served in WWII. She was able to interview a number of these individuals, now in their nineties, and her book will be enjoyed by anyone who treasures baseball history and the history of an America which is rapidly vanishing.

What a well researched, wonderful story. Every American should read and appreciate what the greatest generation sacrificed for us. This book is inspiring.

45 minutes is all it took for me to finally begin sketching my concepts. Yes, that's it. I opened the book during an hour train commute. It looked like a thick book but I was done in 45 minutes. My brain had absorbed and retained concepts and I sketched the take aways for me right away. I love the author laying out the simple patterns - e.g., 5 shapes are all you need to draw.On the ride back I finished the practice sketches. I feel super comfortable sketching out my product concepts. NOW, I know I'm a visual processor and for years have yearned to have a sketch person on-hand on-demand. Now I have him. it's me. If you KNOW you process information this way and just couldn't get started, this quick read can be the change for you!

I've read a few books on conveying ideas through drawing (Back of the Napkin by Dan Roam & Doodle Revolution by Sunni Brown) that were good and full of information, but neither really captured the gravity of using the ideas within to convey the ideas themselves.Throughout the entire book, Mike uses sketchnotes on every page to give the reader a pragmatic, well laid guide for how to take notes visually. He shares examples of other sketctnoters (giving them a platform to be seen and providing real-life examples of other sketchnoters), teaches you the basics of "formatting" your sketchnotes and the basics of drawing, which I've found incredibly helpful for making sure I'm capturing information as fully and clearly as I had hoped.I've gone through this book multiple times, and because of his ability to break the ideas down into digestible chunks and provide a rich wealth of information, I've started taking sketchnotes in meetings, at church and at conferences.

This is a good book not just for the content but also for the design, and both aspects can inspire you if you are fond of using pen and paper (or at least stylus and tablet) to capture what's happening around you. While the concept of a "Sketch Note" seems like something that should not really have a name, the book makes a great case for why visually oriented notes work well. The book contains many examples of notes using the style, and a number of Sketch Notes by practitioners of the craft, including such details as which pens and notebooks they prefer. The book ends with a number of exercises that encourage you to explore your ability to draw using a variety of techniques which make drawing less terrifying that it might be. From the message, to the examples, to the details such as covers with rounded corners (a form that is useful even for those older than "Board Book Age"), you may find this book inspires you to be creative and more attentive when you are taking notes.

I love the idea of sketchnotes. I expected to love this book, but upon reading it I found it lacking.*First, it was rather repetitive. Information in the different chapters overlapped a lot.*Second, I expected more help with creating my own sketchnotes. There is room for practicing different icons and whatnot in the back, but only a few pages. I expected more examples and places to practice typography.*Third, the book was hard to follow in places. It makes good sense to write this book as a big sketch note. However some of the examples from other contributors were all over the place and hard to follow. To me this negates the point of taking notes in this fashion. If you can't make sense of them later, what's the point?*I probably would have been better off buying the workbook first, but I just didn't know. And with the big price difference (the workbook is ~$35) I started here.In general I'd say skip this and just get the workbook (though I haven't actually bought or worked through that). This is a nice compilation of examples from the author in the shape of a book though.

First of all, this is a beautiful book, having a matte(?) finish, full of illustrations, using the very medium to 'deconstruct' itself. I even love the accent color (orange) used throughout the book. Loved the guest sketch noters. Don't get the Kindle edition. Appreciate the book in its native format as the author intended.The videos were okay. I felt they added little value, as the author merely clarified the concepts in his book. Given the passion the author has for sketch-noting, I kinda expected him to burst upon the screen like those guys from the infomercials. He had a business-like demeanor in front of the camera. If there was just one chapter worth watching, I would suggest watching the segment where Mike does a sketch note in real time, listening to Mr. Mueller. Oh- the online videos were not captioned. I would suggest that Peachpit require that future video submissions have subtitling and/or captioning.I primarily bought this book to give me ideas and techniques that i can share with my students. Then, they can make meaningful connections in studying their subject matter, i.e., Math, Reading, Science, in a visual way. It's also nice to undertake some sketch-noting during those professional development workshops. This book delivers for me, full of little tips I can immediately put to use.I feel that this book was somewhat superficial. It is indeed a quick read. I would have liked more coverage on Dual-Coding Theory, for instance. Little coverage was given to speaker patterns. What about having a 'listening triage', weeding out white noise and capturing relevant ideas? What if someone in the audience has an insightful idea? A heated debate? I'm not asking for a full blown treatise; just better coverage on listening and capturing ideas quickly and effectively.Another example; I rely on sign language for communications. In a meeting, I just can't look down and start doodling (or jotting) away. I have to watch, and retain as much as I can before there's a lull in the meeting, then I furiously scribble down my notes. At least, sketching images may be an acceptable substitute in writing notes during lulls as they're quicker to make and i can get back to the presentation at hand. In this book, Mike describes a 'brain cache' area, but doesn't really explore it. I would have liked to acquire better memorization techniques so I can hold ideas until I put them to paper.Mike Rohde is correct that sketch noting is an invaluable addition to a person's toolset in acquiring, retaining, and making meaningful connections between ideas. Not only Dual Coding Theory helps us understand why we retain and make meaningful connections between ideas in a visual manner, it is also kinesiology, the very act of sketching, that helps tie it all together. Thus, sketch notes have the most value to the person who did the notes; it truly helps him/her retain and understand what was presented at that workshop, meeting, etc. Even sketch noting while digesting a heavy treatise helps an individual better grasp and utilize the ideas being learned.However, I find an odd disconnect in treating sketch notes for wide distribution via social media. Sketch notes have little utility in communicating ideas to other people who were not present at the meeting, workshop, etc. I've looked at a couple of sketch notes in the wild and really couldn't understand them. I may grasp bits and pieces, but i get the feeling that I had to be there to understand these sketch notes fully. That said, sketch notes have some utility for communicating ideas with people who actually attended the meeting, workshop, etc., but didn't do any sketch-noting.I may be missing the point, but why would sketch noters share their sketch notes on social media, when they are ill-equipped vehicles in communicating ideas? Is it because they may have some intrinsic artistic merit? Just treat sketch notes as a tool that a person can utilize in capturing and synthesizing ideas in a visual form, and not for any intrinsic artistic value they may have. Overall, a good book.
