This book will tear your heart. The infamy of his prosecution, and persecution, is beyond words. He never savaged his detractors as they did him, primarily the execrable egotist, the tiny little man named Whistler but also Swinburne, so cowardly yet such an unforgettable poet. But at least Swinburne had an excuse since he was psychologically damaged.How many benefitted from his help or encouragement in his glory days, yet figuratively spat at him when a maniac (the Marquess of Queensberry) pursued him to his destruction.His magnificent Biblical drama Salome and the poems inspired by his prison stay will not be forgotten. Nor will Dorian Grey, the ultimate in the tracing of a descent into unspeakable depths.And somewhere down there in those depths can be discerned the ridiculous yet hideous spirit of Alfred Douglas, a man whose existence was totally pointless.Among the numberless acquaintances of this tragic figure I must pay tribute to Nellie Melba, rarely described as warm-hearted, but it was she who emptied her purse for him on a Paris street when, threadbare and penniless, he was forced to ask for money.That powerfully descriptive phrase "emptied her purse" is straight from the book, just one of many memorable phrases that make the history live for the reader.I believe there never was and never will be a superior biography of Oscar Wilde.

A real door-stop at 600 pages of 7-point type, but you'll want to read every word of it. It's a triumph of loving research. I would describe Ellmann's prose as more workmanlike than entertaining, but that's perfectly OK, because Oscar's life was so amazing that any biographer's vanity would only get in the way. If you have any humanity at all, you'll finish this book having fallen in love with Oscar and identifying with him. You will hate his persecutors, tormenters, and deserters, and especially you will loathe the rot and ugliness of class. You will finally feel drained, crushed, and utterly devastated. But you will come away wiser and strangely more sympathetic and loving toward all humans, as Oscar was, not because they are lovable, but because you happen to be one.

Enjoyed this bio. Have always wanted to read about him in more detail. This certainly goes into detail about every aspect of his life. It was well written and kept my interest. Oxford at that time was certainly different! Lots of quotes and poems and interesting facts about artists and academics. The writing was so small I almost needed stronger glasses - this is my only criticism but I should have checked first!

God save Ellman. He knows more than anyone about Irish writers, and I love his writing style. I also recommend, so strongly, his bio of Joyce.

I thought I was literate right up until the first page of Richard Ellman’s book Oscar Wilde. His writing does a far greater service to Wilde’s life than it probably deserves.

This is an amazing and exhaustive work about Oscar Wilde's life and is highly recommended by one Wilde's biggest fans, Mr. Stephen Fry. The book does not disappoint.

This book was a nice addition to any Oscar Wilde collection, I gifted it to a friend after reading and it was awesome! Loved the footnotes and attention to detail.

Nice cover and nice paper and good font. That deserves two stars. However, almost all of the reviews are misleading if you think they are talking about this book. Amazon is applying reviews in batch to the story, not to any particular edition. Beware. This edition, with this cover and with "The Discovery of the Great" at the top, is bogus. The closest you come to identifying the publisher is in the back: "Made in the USA San Bernardino, CA 26 February 2018". It will be printed just for you, most likely from text that was originally on standard 8 1/2" by 11". When sent to the printer and printed on 6" x 9" paper stock, most all the lines wrap so you get some short lines and some long - a complete mess! This printer did not even bother to define the right paper size. Also did not bother to print page numbers or anything beyond the Mark Twain text.

Alot of the complaints in the reviews about this book are that "It is too slow", and "It is too difficult to read." Guess what! This is not The Hunger Games or The Twilight Series. This is actual literature from over 100 years ago. Yes it takes work to get through the dialogue. It is not exactly a page turner in that regard. But if you can be patient, and "get into the groove' of the dialect, then you will soon be able to read through the conversation with less effort. It is rewarding! Of course, I am reading this as an adult, and because I chose to do so, and not for a homework assignment. I am glad I took the time to do so, because this to me is what literature is all about. It's rewarding - not just a book you cruise through in two days, and then give it to your 10 year old who also reads it in two days. There is a lot of social commentary, as well as commentary about the inherent decency of man, and what we do to screw up our kids along the way. Critics are correct, this is not a children's book. It just happens to be about a child. Mark Twain was a masterful writer. I hope you take the time to work through this book. Also, the Dover Thrift version does not appear to be censored - as some of the other books are purported to be.

There are three significant translations of this book, and amazon's lacklustre book-sorting system creates nothing but chaos when searching for the correct format / translation of this book. We bought this book for my child’s 7th grade summer reading. For this, annotation is required including underlining. The printing on this book is so so small that I literally gasped when I opened the book. This book should be 3-4 times as thick but they’ve condensed the font size so much to save pages that it is useless to a student. I have 20/20 vision and would struggle. I want my money back but am not going to bother sending it back because it would cost me as much postage as I paid for the “book.” The text size is what I’m guessing to be 5 pt font. It’s shocking!!!! We are headed to Barnes and Noble to get something we can actually use for school.

I wanted to re-read this due to the discussions of removing it from school libraries and required reading lists related the use of a certain word. I read this in the fifth grade, and at that time, it was simply a great adventure of two boys . Now, over 50+ years later I see it in an entirely different light. It is not just an adventure of two boys... but also a social and political commentary on slavery. Now I truly appreciate the significance and genius of Mark Twain. It is a part of our history that we need to study and learn from. Like the Holocaust...we should never forget.

The maps and guides are easy to read. They give a range of activities within each category depending on what kind of experience you're looking for / pricing. Oh my, 20 pages into this Tour Guide and it is clear the author/editor has a liberal slant. I am kind of shocked. Can we keep the politics out of Tour Guides please? No more Frommer's for me. Clearly there are better choices.

Excellent guide to the city for first time visitors or regular travelers looking for some new places to go. Information was accurate and helpful. We enjoyed the restaurants recommended, and the walking tours are full of history and easy to follow.

Excellent guide book and it has been updated for 2018.

We were planning a trip to DC and I ordered the Frommer's EasyGuide to help us both determine what to see and what order to see things in so that we'd minimize travel (walking & Metro). It worked out very well. Good guide with great explanations, very good map with key locations plainly marked AND with the metro stops on the map! Map was removable (about 11 X 14 inches) from guide, too.

This guide was okay. It was very liberal minded, making many references and praises to Obama while also name calling and making negative remarks about Trump. For a travel guide, I don’t see where any political opinion should have been present. It also has lengthy details about the more art centered attractions and not as much to others. For me, it didn’t provide me too much more than what a google search has done.

Just what I was looking for. A foldable laminated map of the major sites in DC.

I briefly looked through this book. It seemed to contain great and detailed information. However, we changed our minds and decided not to travel to DC so I never got the opportunity to fully explore the book.

Great book, looking forward to using it this year.
