I love this book, this series and this author. I've read and re-read it. I finally broke down and purchased my own digital copy and I have to say I am appalled at the typos and grammatical errors found in the digital version that are virtually non-existent in the hard copy. It's beyond distracting. I saw on this site that the publisher had been notified. I wanted to add my voice to the others in case it might make a difference. I give the book itself 5 stars, without hesitation, but c'mon, publisher...you're better than this, right? Give Mr. Lawhead's work the respect it deserves and make this right.

This isn’t just another story about Atlantis. It’s also not just a story about how Christianity spread to the British Isles before the Dark Ages. It isn’t just a romance novel. It took a few chapters to draw me into the story. I’ve always believed in the existence of non-documented continents and lands before modern history. Most tales place Atlantis’ existence around 10,000 BCE or even further back. So Stephen Lawhead’s rendition was interesting and the merge with early Christianity was intriguing. They say truth may be stranger than fiction but fiction can play a lead role in the search for reality. I did find quite a few ‘typos’ in this first of the series. I’ll read the Merlin story although I’m not a strong fan of the era of knights, battles, and the Dark- Middle Ages. I wasn’t ready for the ending of Taliesin. Maybe the Merlin will offer more.

As the Pendragon Cycle goes, so goes Stephen Lawhead; his prose borders on the lyrical, his command of character persona flawless, his descriptive verse unmatched. Following his story line and witnessing the smooth meshing of various points of view is a pleasure. If the author possesses one flaw (albeit a miniscule one) it is his over-reliance of Christianity to narrate the tale at times---would have preferred the druid POV considering the time!frame.

The concept of this book makes it worth the read for those who like Arthurian legends, but the plot development was slow and the story overall lacked traction or complexity. This is a love story first and foremost, so those looking for a more action and adventure oriented story won't be satisfied. I was hoping that if an Arthurian Legend series was so bold as to start with Atlantis, well before Arthur was even born, that the story and immersion in myth, geography, and character would be a bit more challenging, deep, and enriched. It was not. It was fairly simple and I kept wondering when the plot would "take off." The broad concepts in this series are common to many King Arthur series, the pending external threat, the cultural and religious transitions, the rise of heroes, and are all included, and while they present drama, the writer presents these concepts as either too little, background mentioning, or too much, several exhausting pages of a character's cognitive process in dealing any particular drama. And though I only give it three stars, considering that this series has a good reputation, I am willing to pick up the next book, Merlin.

"Taliesin" is the first of five books in "The Pendragon Cycle". I found this retelling of the familiar Arthurian legend interesting because this book focuses entirely on Merlin's parents and the lost city of Atlantis. The author spent a significant portion of the book focusing on Atlantis to include the cities, buildings, governing system, a civil war, and a touch of religion focusing on the worship of Bel. Unfortunately, all of this was effectively thrown away when the ocean rose up to swallow the island state of Atlantis.There were several aspects of the book that I struggled with including Taliesin's origin, the age differences between Merlin's parents, and the mix of Christianity with pagan gods.I realize Christianity and the worship of the old gods were rival beliefs during England's rise to power in the early centuries, but I found it hard to believe a druid could worship the one true God while still using magical powers (e.g., spells, walking in the Otherwold, etc.) derived from the old gods. It seemed to be a bit of contradiction because Christianity would eschew these pagan things. I've seen and read Arthurian stories where druids, and Merlin in particular, had great magical powers, where they were shams relying on illusion and tricks, and where there were no magical abilities involved. This is the first time I've seen an author mix Christianity with magic.On the positive side, this retelling was clean as it didn't include sexual scenes, profanity, or violent/graphic battle scenes. There were skirmishes, but they were well done as to not focus on the blood and gore aspect. There was also a bit of a love story as this becomes an underlying theme throughout the book driving Merlin's parents together.

All of the most enduring legends and myths have roots in small kernels of truth. Atlantis, Arthurian legends, these are the stories we can't get enough of. Why? Because, the unanswered questions call out to us, haunting us. There have been other attempts at telling at fleshing out these tales, but none compare to this series, written by the modern day bard, Stephen R. Lawhead. His book, TALIESIN, is the beginning of a haunting journey back into the past, unraveling some of the mystery. Along the way, you will find magic, tragedy, joy, love, healing, and more, all woven into a fresh, yet timeless story. And, once you read TALIESIN, you'll crave more. Read it, and then read...MERLIN.

So I had a chance to buy this book and read it and I believe it is one of the best sources to prepare you for CASPer. It has step by step information about the test itself, the challenges of it and how to overcome and ace it. Make sure you dedicate enough time because this book is very detailed but if you are a skim reader, you can quickly go over the early chapters and then focus more on the chapters the specifically discuss the ways to do well in CASPer. I definitely recommend this book to everyone taking this test.

I have been using bemo for my dental school interview prep, and it is really very helpful and made a difference with me. It helped me to frame my answers and get confidence. I did a 2 hour mock interview with them too one day before my interview, and really the mentor put her hand on my weaknesses with honest advices to improve. I really recommend bemo for everyone.

The book has useful and has good strategies that should be implemented for the CASPer exam. It also gives a nice breakdown of how the CASPer is scored and other important details about the exam. Highly recommend students preparing for CASPer and even the MMI!

The framework is so clever. really helps me organize my thoughts so I have something nice to write even when I don't know anything about the topic. Definitely found this book helpful while preparing for my MMI interview; it provides comprehensive information on what types of MMI questions you may face, strategies, and how to structure your response (helpful given that there's no specific questions/scenarios you can truly prepare for). Easy to read too. If you buy this, I recommend preparing for on all the different types of questions listed in this book and practice early!

As a minister, we deal with a variety of issues. There is the normal stress in leadership within a congregation. Often this creates an interesting paradox because you are called to lead, but the perspective in some congregations is that the minister is not a leader. Any time you have paradox within a system, it will create stress within the person caught in the middle of the confusion. Because of this reality, it is wise to invest your time in leadership develop. There are numerous books to help the minister to improve leadership skills, but this book is excellent because it deals with the soul of your leadership. It is a first priority message. If you soul is weak, your ministry will fall. As a preacher, you must be careful about not being so busy working that you stop growing in your walk with the Lord. This is probably one of the best books for ministers that I have read in years. It was encouraging, wakening, and insightful. As a minister, it is so essential that we spent time in this area. You can become so focused on activity that you forget the soul in your leadership. The book is filled with insight: "Taking responsibility for oneself may well be more demanding than taking responsibility for a congregation or an organization! Whether it happens early or late, it is crucial to our capacity to lead spiritually." "Many of us are choosing to live lives that do not set us up to pay attention, to notice those places where God is at work and to ask ourselves what these things mean. We long for a word from the Lord, but somehow we have been suckered into believing that the pace we keep is what leadership requires. We slide inexorably into a way of life that offers little or no opportunity for paying attention and then wonder why we are not hearing from God when we need God most." Here is a great insight into leadership for a minister. It is in reference to Moses leading his people out of slavery. The people will follow you because you have met me. Because you know my name deep in your being. That is what qualifies you to be a spiritual leader, and that is why people will be willing to follow you right out of the place they have known for so long to a place that is brand-new." The book deals with the life of Moses to provide important lessons. Here is a crucial thought. Rather than the brash, impulsive, take-matters-into-my-own-hands kind of leader that he once tried to be, he is now someone who is able to offer a deeply spiritual response in the face of grave danger. He knows that his soul is not going to be strengthened by getting caught up in the people’s fears and complaints." Here is another gem. "Self-differentiated leadership always triggers sabotage which is a systemic part of leadership—so much so that a leader can never assume success merely because he or she had brought about change. It is only after having first brought about change and then subsequently endured the resultant sabotage that the leader can feel truly successful. When the sabotage comes, this is the moment when the leader is most likely to experience a failure of nerve and seek a quick fix." This is truly a great book about leadership, not because it provides resources or tools, but because he deals with the core of leadership, your soul's health.

Using the life and journey of Moses as a comparison for the growth and life of a leader Ruth Haley Barton's "Strengthening the Soul of Your Leadership" was an excellent read. I noticed that another reviewer mentioned that there isn't anything new under the sun, referring to nothing new being mentioned in this book. That might be true, but it is always good to be reminded of truths. Barton's sweet and direct words make the charges and challenges she lays out for growth seem more like encouragements of moving forward than shaming of "why haven't you gotten this yet?".I have been working through an internship at my church and this was the book that we read to discuss for the last month. At that meeting we were asked what some of the things that stood out to us were and, for me, the part that stood out the most... that still stands out the most, was about letting go of the striving and trying to "make things okay". I don't have the book right here with me but there was a few paragraphs that I read to the group and that felt equal parts soothing parts of my heart that I didn't realize needed to hear it but also challenged me to let go and not try to make everything okay. God is trustworthy.So, yes, there is nothing new under the sun, but God has given the ability to convey the same ideas to different people so that they might reach people in different ways. And I am thankful for the way that God gifted Barton with the words and ideas of this book.

I hung on every word in this book. It was confirmation of things God is already doing in my life and it was inspiring to help me think outside the box to new things He might do in and through me. This book, I'm sure has already changed many lives that don't even know it exists, simply because the leaders in their lives have drawn closer to Jesus because of it.

This is a "must read" for pastors. The life and ministry of Moses is an excellent choice, which she develops well. I often incorporate excerpts from this book and recommend it while leading retreats and workshops for clergy. Barton understands the soul-drain that can happen to pastors if they do not have solid spiritual practices. However, this book is more than a teaching on spiritual practices. Barton addresses issues and motives and pitfalls most pastors encounter. She provides plenty of meat to chew on, while also giving hope and solid guidance for perseverance in ministry.

After being in ministry only a short time, I found myself wondering if something wasn’t missing. It often felt forced, artificial, and in the end draining.I don’t know if I can really put together adequate words to describe how much this book has helped me, but I know that since reading it and enjoying a two week time of rest, my view to not only ministry but walking with God has changed radically.I will never go back to doing ministry and life he way I was before.Highly recommended for anyone in and outside of leadership in any capacity, anyone struggling with ministry as a profession and feeling routine, or anyone simply longing for more of God but not sure how to get there or even articulate the desire.Well done, Dr. Barton.

Thank you for being faithful to your call to care for those whom God is calling to care and guide His people! I believe that I finally know what God is calling me to while journeying through this book! I know that the Lord is with me and especially my mouth as I call the Church to get involved in the child welfare system and just caring for the fatherless!

Fred Craddock was, perhaps, the best of the preachers and teachers of preachers of his generation. He died March 6, 2015 after a long and productive ministry.I had the privilege to attend one of his classes, and it transformed my understanding of preaching. He had us read a short story each evening. During the class session, he would ask what we had read and what there was about it that pulled us in--kept us interested--caused us to want to continue. The answer was usually that the story kept us in suspense. He concluded that the old guidelines of "Tell them what you're going to tell them--and then tell them--and then tell them what you told them" was a prescription for boredom.I bought the book, Preaching, to see what he had to say. He wrote it as a textbook. I haven't read the whole book yet, but what I have read so far is well-written, practical, common-sensical.It also has the virtue of being to-the-point. It is only 222 pages, and every page is well-planned and consideredIf I were teaching a course in homiletics today, I would probably adopt this as the course textbook. Anyone who aspires to learn to preach or to learn to preach better will be well-served by taking the time to read this book--to study it--to allow it to guide their understanding of preaching--and to use it to develop disciplines for improving their preaching.

This little book outlines a very careful design for strong, spiritual and scriptural sermons. It is not focused on the "academic" disciplines of homiletics or exegesis. It does not even get to the actual delivery of a sermon until the last chapter. I love his three assumptions at the beginning of this chapter: you have done the medical work to establish that you have the physical equipment to preach; you have done your vocal exercises just like a world class concert pianist still practices the scales; and you have actually read the scripture text.The form and delivery of the sermon will grow naturally and organically from the preparation done before, long before, Sunday morning or Saturday night.

This book is a classic in its field, and perhaps because of that does not read like an academic text. Rather it models the thing it is talking about, a sermon, with a personal voice and an expectation that the preacher is engaged a spiritual experience. But don't be fooled: Craddock analyzes with insight the whole complex process of preparing, composing, and proclaiming good words for the people of God. He offers both strategic and tactical plans for those who have to do this every week. His advice about the composition process is very specific and practical. Worst thing I could say about the book is that occasionally he seems to be fighting old battles. Worth while.

I'm not big into using other people's lectionary guides when preparing sermons. Most of them are not worth the money. It seems to me that pastors who rely too heavily on such material cease to be be original and lack scholarship.This series is not like that. The authors are among today's best preachers. They give direction and background, but do not offer "canned" sermons.If you preach from the Revised Common Lectionary, this series WILL improve your preaching. Whatever you do, don't go any deeper into the year without purchasing this entire series.Bonus hint: If you preach from the Revised Common Lectionary, look up textweek.com. This resource is also invaluable.

I placed an order for Preaching Through the Christian Year A but what I received was Preaching Through the Christian Year C. Just completed year cycle C so have little use for the year C book I received. Nothing is wrong with the book I was sent my dissatisfaction is with it being the wrong book.

This is a good book when used as a text book for comparison to other styles and methods of Preaching. Craddock has used what has been successful in his experience to reach into mainstream, Western culture churches. I would recommend this book as 1 of several for practical application in public preaching. I was concerned with some of the methods used to grasp congregation attention, almost as if a performance is expected, however, a preacher who understands and knows their congregation will appreciate the reasoning Craddock uses to peak interest. For the student, this is a good book to have as one develops a preaching style of their own. It is tuned to an academic audience, so I would suggest keeping a dictionary handy, for some of the terms used. I liked it, but I would not recommend it as the only resource for Preaching.

I used this book in Intro to Preaching course, and found it one of the most difficult to read with big words and concepts that needed additional interpretations within themselves that distracted me from what the author was saying. One thing I can say is that it has a lot of relevant information to preaching. I'm not sure it teaches me how to preach though so if that's your goal, you may want to consider another book.

There is a lot of great information in Craddock's preaching book, it still is a classic work on preaching. Some of the content appears to be a bit dated, but it is worth the read.

This book will tear your heart. The infamy of his prosecution, and persecution, is beyond words. He never savaged his detractors as they did him, primarily the execrable egotist, the tiny little man named Whistler but also Swinburne, so cowardly yet such an unforgettable poet. But at least Swinburne had an excuse since he was psychologically damaged.How many benefitted from his help or encouragement in his glory days, yet figuratively spat at him when a maniac (the Marquess of Queensberry) pursued him to his destruction.His magnificent Biblical drama Salome and the poems inspired by his prison stay will not be forgotten. Nor will Dorian Grey, the ultimate in the tracing of a descent into unspeakable depths.And somewhere down there in those depths can be discerned the ridiculous yet hideous spirit of Alfred Douglas, a man whose existence was totally pointless.Among the numberless acquaintances of this tragic figure I must pay tribute to Nellie Melba, rarely described as warm-hearted, but it was she who emptied her purse for him on a Paris street when, threadbare and penniless, he was forced to ask for money.That powerfully descriptive phrase "emptied her purse" is straight from the book, just one of many memorable phrases that make the history live for the reader.I believe there never was and never will be a superior biography of Oscar Wilde.

A real door-stop at 600 pages of 7-point type, but you'll want to read every word of it. It's a triumph of loving research. I would describe Ellmann's prose as more workmanlike than entertaining, but that's perfectly OK, because Oscar's life was so amazing that any biographer's vanity would only get in the way. If you have any humanity at all, you'll finish this book having fallen in love with Oscar and identifying with him. You will hate his persecutors, tormenters, and deserters, and especially you will loathe the rot and ugliness of class. You will finally feel drained, crushed, and utterly devastated. But you will come away wiser and strangely more sympathetic and loving toward all humans, as Oscar was, not because they are lovable, but because you happen to be one.

Enjoyed this bio. Have always wanted to read about him in more detail. This certainly goes into detail about every aspect of his life. It was well written and kept my interest. Oxford at that time was certainly different! Lots of quotes and poems and interesting facts about artists and academics. The writing was so small I almost needed stronger glasses - this is my only criticism but I should have checked first!

God save Ellman. He knows more than anyone about Irish writers, and I love his writing style. I also recommend, so strongly, his bio of Joyce.

I thought I was literate right up until the first page of Richard Ellman’s book Oscar Wilde. His writing does a far greater service to Wilde’s life than it probably deserves.

This is an amazing and exhaustive work about Oscar Wilde's life and is highly recommended by one Wilde's biggest fans, Mr. Stephen Fry. The book does not disappoint.

This book was a nice addition to any Oscar Wilde collection, I gifted it to a friend after reading and it was awesome! Loved the footnotes and attention to detail.

Books are like very personal items; either you're interested in the subject matter or you're not but somebody else is. Open the cover and take your chances.
