A pretty decent work from a pretty decent artist. Don't just 'read' it! :)

This is a very small book, consisting mainly of diagrams. In my opinion, it is much like a power point presentation: you would have had to have been there. No doubt of much use to the student attending the Bauhaus when Klee taught there, I can only quote the dedication on the title page of my second-hand copy 'Finished with dismay on 10-16-64'.Obviously created with much care and labor, I missed any message that the author has to give. In view of the beautiful art that this man produced, I end with the feeling that my confusion is due to my insufficiency rather than his.

This is a book I deeply enjoyed, it has a mix of Greek Mythology and Fantasy. The authors created a plausible young Odysseus, it doesnâ€™t feel out of place or character. Its Odysseus through and through, and for me that adds a lot of value to the story.Odysseus is a theios, â€œgod-touchedâ€ awakened by Athena that offered him her protection. He was sceptic about the gods to later discover they were real and mankind is at their mercy. Heâ€™s also portrayed as idealistic, I would like to highlight his conversation with Bria about honor: â€œâ€˜I thought Athena stood for honour.â€™ â€˜Honour? No, she stands for logic, and logic has little place for irrational concepts like honour.â€Sometimes I felt as if the book goes in separate ways with Homerâ€™s original story, nevertheless, the authors always manage to bring the story back to the original. It has a good ending and I look forward to the next book in the series.I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Continuing on my historical fantasy kick, on the heels of Son of Zeus I now have fellow god-titled novel Athenaâ€™s Champion.After professing my love for Heracles in the earlier review, this follows the early exploits of another favourite, Odysseus.For those whoâ€™ve read the Iliad and the Odyssey, or those who havenâ€™t, some scholars believe the two stories to be social parables, detailing change in Greek society, and their argument is not without merit. Having read Athenaâ€™s Champion, the author also echoes some of those changes. .We meet a young Odysseus, on the day when his fate will be announced by the oracle. Needless to say, it does not go according to plan, and Odysseus is forced to leave his home of Ithaca for the wide world beyond - and boy are his eyes opened. The times are changing. Some of the heroes of old are still kicking around, and they do not meet the standards of our young hero. We meet Theseus, for example, who is strong and brave, but also a drunkard, brutish and quick to anger, acting first and thinking later. Odysseus, on the other hand, Is short (by heroic standards), quick-witted and asks questions incessantly, much to the ire of the old minotaur slayer.This is no biography though. There is a plot here, and a fine one at that. In the vein of social change, the gods are at war too. Having maintained a tenuous alliance for millenia (or so), Zeus is making a power play for sole rulership of Olympus. Needless to say, the other gods take umbrage and fight back. With Zeus looking to consolidate his power (by gaining worshippers), the other gods fear they will fade away into non-existence like the gods of old. But the gods cannot interact with humans directly, hence they need us pesky mortals to do their dirty work on earth.Odysseus receives his patronage from Athena, which comes with heightened senses and skills, faster healing and so forth, but heâ€™s still young, and takes a few beatings from the more experienced theloi (god-blessed)along the way. However,his smarts keep him alive and kicking, and our hero starts on the journey that will lead him to his famous Odyssey, which Iâ€™ve only mentioned about 30 times.Earlier I mentioned Son of Zeus,and this is very different in tone, far less dark, but also vaster in scope. The characters are great, from Odysseus and boorish Theseus, to the gods who are just as petty and cruel as the old Hercules TV show claimed. Even the future battle of Troy is set up as far more than an angry cuckold trying to maintain his ego. I really enjoyed this,and Iâ€™ve had some time to mull it over before I wrote this review. Iâ€™ve got to say, if I hadnâ€™t already written my top 10 of 2018, this would definitely have made it.An epic 5/5 stars.

What a thrilling read ATHENA'S CHAMPION was. Odysseus has long been a favorite hero of mine and when I saw this book and read the blurb did I just knew that I had to read the book. The book is action filled and I love how David Hair and Cath May right from the start make Odysseus life miserable. Well, that sounds bad, but just think about his little trip home from Troy that lasted a little longer than expected. Odysseus discovery about his heritage at the beginning of the book and all the obstacles, later on, will just show that he's on a road to more obstacles in the future...I really liked this new take on Odysseus life. How he learns more about the world and about the Gods. Not to mention all he learns about himself. I like how the myth of Prometheus is added to the story and the struggle between the Gods for power. Poor Odysseus is but a pawn in the hands of Athena, but he proves quickly that he is very cunning.As a big fantasy fan historical fiction fan was this book a real winner for me. David Hair and Cath Mayo have written a great book that makes me eager to get the next book in the series. I was a bit worried that the book would end up with a cliffhanger, but I found the ending satisfying. This is definitely a book to read if you like Greek mythology and/or historical fiction about gods and heroes.

I especially loved how they portrayed Athena and Hades.I had to suspend the known story at times and take their telling for what it is, but the book was still terribly entertaining for me. I liked the splashes of Greek words and especially insults thrown into the dialogue, but wish they had kept to traditional insults vs bringing in so much modern day slang.This book earns a solid 4/5 stars, and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who likes a good history, mythology, or fantasy based read!

I can't tell you it's a bad manual. I'm very NOT computer savvy. I bought Front Page, installed it, and never used it. Then I eventually bought the upgrade which was Expressions Web...so this manual wouldn't be of much use at that point. And if you haven't mastered Front Page before you move to Expressions Web upgrade...you're screwed. It assumes you've mastered it and there is nothing that will help you at that point.So I can't really give you an accurate assessment of the manual. I SO miss when hard copy manuals came with all software. I need them. Ultimately, I donated it and never used it...or the program. I know when I'm whooped.

I've been designing web sites for quite some time now. By no means am I a professional but I can make web sites using basic coding and that's what I had to do until I found FrontPage 2003. FrontPage 2003 greatly reduced the amount of time it took me to create a web site. Although I had been using the program for a while, after I decided to start a business designing web sites I bought several books on FrontPage 2003. I wanted to have the most knowledge about the program as possible and be able to produce the most professional looking web sites for customers. Out of the several books that I purchased all on this one program, I found this book to be the most helpful and overall best book on the topic. It covers everything you need to know from start to finish. It starts out by explaining basic web site design features of the program and then progressively describes more detailed processes as the book continues. All instructions are easy to read and understand. Out of all the books I've purchased, this book has helped me fully understand the program the best. If I had to recommend one book on FrontPage 2003 to a friend, this book would be the one.

With the caveat that I am still wading through the early chapters,I bought this book based on the favorable reviews of others here. I haven't been disappointed.I will say that it is very comphrensive. Most of the publications from O'Reilly seem to be good and usable.Usable because I have bought some manuals in the past from other publishers that are close to worthless. The cynical side of me wonders if some publishers pay the authors by the word with no regard to content.After all, how many 300-400 page manuals are out there promising the user to "simplify" the understanding of the application?This book, while on the large side (normal as manuals go), seems to be full of meat with no useless fluff.One thing I would like a manual to have - and I do not believe any exist - is to give the reader a **macro** level view of the software then go into the **micro*** levels. Most all start at the micro levels taking you from chapter to chapter.This book has you from the beginning building a practice website so I suppose one could say that approaches a macro level -What I would like to see is a chapter devoted to the various sections of the Dreamweaver application - which is huge.I thought it laughable that while Adobe let me download a 65 MB 30 day trial version with NO documentation (which was nice - don't think I am ungrateful) - I tried some of their on-line tutorials and the few I tried "assumed" one knew all the web jargon.Back to the book - I think it is one of the best manuals out there on this application - and as the title on all of these "Missing Manual" series allude, it is the manual that should have come with the software.If I were to write a manual I think I would have a monster index with a "what do you want to do" section - took me 3 days to learn that Dreamweaver doesn't create thumbnails as easily as Frontpage..Or perhaps - to make this book perfect - include a CD - or offer on the web - a complete website sample with all the features they teach you. As you roll the cursor over these features they tell you (chapter) how do do them. That would make the book perfect.This book does allow you to go onto the web and download files for the tutorial, which you use to help build your practice web site (which I am doing now).I'll change my ranking from 4 stars to 5...

I was initially attracted to this book by its title. I have often been frustrated and even angry by the poor quality of manuals that come with so many products. It's then a burden to locate an appropriate, well written manual. Some are too basic; some too advanced. At least for me, this one was written at the right level and with a pleasant style to read. I had first read parts of Frontpage 2003 for Dummies and Microsoft's Step-by-Step book. They were okay, but this book was better. This book seemed to have more substance without a lot more heft. And it's nice to read a computer manual with a critical perspective and a slightly irreverant tone--something that is missing from the Microsoft series. The book wasn't perfect. I had trouble, for example, following its chapters on layers and cascading style sheets. Something seemed to be missing from these chapters. I don't exactly know what except that these chapters didn't fulfill their stated purpose. All in all, though, an excellent book.

To bad it took an outsider to write a how to manual for Microsoft's FrontPage 2003. This is a real How To manual. I learned more from this manual than Microsoft's own book "FrontPage 2003 Step by Step", which I also own but was a waste of money. Not only does it tell you how to, it also has step by step practice sections. Not only does it tell you why, but how. This is not only a great book for beginners, but the advanced as well. Thanks to Jessica Mantaro we now have a manual that Microsoft should have included.

A simple yet thorough guide to FrontPage 2003. After using FrontPage for many years with good results, it's nice to know just how powerful FrontPage can really be. Have you ever followed the steps and yet it doesn't seem to work right? This book takes you through the steps and gives you hints and tips for the 1 missing step we've all been missing. A simple guide, yet to the point and thorough. I refer to this manual for quick reference all the time. Well worth the price.

I was impressed by the book. I am coming from a different field than educational game design, but with a substantial background in Digital Humanities. I was looking for a book that would help me implement my ideas on the creation of an educational game on history and geography. Kalmpourtzis' book fulfilled all my expectations and more. He leads the reader through gradual steps to the theoretical concept of "learning" and the necessary practical skills for creating your game.I came to this field carrying my prejudices on game designing and education, but the author helped me to understand better my own ideas about games and game experiences. Little did I know how fundamental it is to know your audience or how substantially the game aesthetics change the experience of education.I found this book very helpful both as theoretical guide but also as a handbook for practical issues. My favorite chapters were the ones on Game Interfaces and Game Aesthetics (chapters 11 and 12 respectively) because the author aided me to understand my mistakes in my own project and to make substantial improvements.Despite the fact that the book is dealing with sometimes complicated topics, it is highly readable (donâ€™t be surprised if you end up having it as a pillow book) and well-illustrated. My recommendation is reading the whole book once or twice and then using each individual chapter as you move along with your project.

I have read several books on game design and education but none has the intensity, creativity and pragmatism of this one. This is a book infused with the experience of a veteran of the field, with real examples, that helped me understand better the issues and challenges that may appear when I design learning games. I believe that this is a must read for anyone that wants to have an introduction to game design for education.

Wish this book had been available 5 years ago when I decided to move to Guatemala. After living there 3 years I can attest that this book does the best job I've seen of introducing the country to the reader. It tells enough of each region and city to allow one to find out if they wish to visit and where to go if so. One of the best things I like is that it is an enjoyable read since it does not bog the reader down in minutia, but is FULL of references to websites for specific information including many government sites, classified ad sites, and social networking sites for meeting and questioning other expats. BUY IT if you're even thinking of visiting much less moving there.

This book is well-written and contains a lot of good information for those thinking of living in Guatemala. I'm an ex-pat from the US, and wish I had been able to access all this information before I moved here 11 years ago. The author definitely knows his material and presents it in a useful way.
